Korea is riding on the
"hallyu" movement - the globalization of Korean dramas
(K-dramas). Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China
or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas are enamored by the
"real" acting and fascinating stories that unfold
before their eyes.
K-dramas are a refreshing
change for many, and some, like Winter Sonata, take them back to
first loves. Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell about
history in a fascinating way with rich costumes and realistic
sets.
While some viewers may
find them too "mild" for their taste, many others will
be thrilled to find tasteful, endearing programming that reels
them in and leaves them wanting more...and more...and
more....and then they're hooked only to find that they are part
of the "hallyu" movement.
Buying
Korean Dramas
If you are
interested in buying Korean dramas, be careful where you buy
them. Buying from eBay and other sites may be less
expensive, but as the saying goes "you get what you pay
for."
From personal
experience, buying off of eBay or other sites usually results in
bootleg or illegal copies of the dramas which results in poor
picture quality. Some bootleg copies also have very poor
English subtitles, ranging from jibberish to excessive foul
language. The only site we use and recommend, because of
the excellent quality of the DVDs and English subtitles, is
YesAsia.com. YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor of
Korean DVDs in North America.

Before Romeo and Juliet and
Chunhyang, there was Seo Dong and Seon Hwa. The fated love between
Princess Seon Hwa of the Shilla kingdom and Seo Dong, the future
King Mu of the Baekje kingdom, is a classic tale set in
Shakespearean lore. It is immortalized in Seo Dong Yo, or
"The Ballad of Seo Dong", an old Korean folk song that
spread quickly through the palace and the country during the
Shilla period. This age-old story now receives new life under
Lee Byung Hoon, the man behind masterpieces like Dae Jang
Geum and Hur Jun. With stars Jo Hyun Jae (Love
Letter) and Lee Bo Young (Mr. Good-bye) on board, Seo
Dong Yo promises to be as innovative and engaging as Lee's
previous historical dramas.
Seo Dong (Jo Hyun Jae) is
just a commoner, a technician who grew up
in Baekje's prestigious Taehaksa Institute, but his life is on
the brink of extraordinary change. His love for Shilla's
Princess Seon Hwa (Lee Bo Young) transforms his life forever,
and he carries a secret that could alter the fate of the Baekje
kingdom. The 7-disc Volume 1 set features the first 21 episodes
of Seo Dong Yo, which detail Seo Dong's childhood, his
first meeting with Seon Hwa, and his maturation at Taehaksa.
The second volume of Seo

Mok Ra Su (Lee Chang Hoon) fighting to keep the secret of
Baekje's Crown Prince intact, and Satek Giru plotting with Buyeo
Seon (Kim Young Ho) to disrupt their plans.

Yamaguchi Hana ~ Bae
Du Na
Go Jin Pyo ~ Kim Min Joon
Kim Seok Man ~ Lee Jin Wook ~ Oh Yooh Ah
Synopsis:
The first
Korean drama to integrate animation and live action, Someday
is like no drama that has come before. Through outstanding
cinematography and visual design, this groundbreaking drama
beautifully lenses Korea's contemporary urban landscape and peeks
into the moody, imaginative world of a comic book artist. Written
by movie screenwriter Kim Hee Jae (Hanbando), Someday
represents another landmark work from Yellow Film, whose other
2006 titles include the critically acclaimed Alone in Love
and Freeze. A "movie-like drama" with top-end production
values, Someday features film star Bae Du Na (The Host),
drama favorite Kim Min Joon (Lovers in Prague, Damo), and
rising stars Lee Jin Wook and Oh Yoon Ah from Alone in Love.
In contrast with its fanciful images, the drama stays candid and
grounded in its exploration of modern relationships and romance,
presenting a story that is both painfully realistic and longingly
lighthearted.
Although
Korean-Japanese cartoonist Yamaguchi Hana (Bae Du Na) has found
great success with her romantic comic books, she herself doesn't
believe in love. Raised by her grandmother, she is content to live
in her own world of writing and drawing, but one day her comic
gets discontinued. Unceremoniously thrown back into the real
world, Hana travels to Seoul where she meets Kim Seok Man (Lee Jin
Wook), a kind-hearted private investigator with a tragic past, and
Go Jin Pyo (Kim Min Joon), a doctor and ardent comic fan who
observes life with a detached eye. As Hana retraces the tragic
love story of her elderly neighbors with Seok Man and Jin Pyo's
help, she realizes that she herself is experiencing love for the
first time.

Daniel Henney
Synopsis:
The
original flagbearer of the Korean Wave, renowned producer Yoon
Suk Ho has won over fans all over Asia with his "season"
dramas, starting in 2000 with the classic Tale of Autumn
(a.k.a. Endless Love) starring Song Seung Heon, Song Hye Kyo,
and Won Bin. He followed up in 2002 with the heartwrenching
Winter Sonata starring Bae Yong Jun and Choi Ji Woo. These two
dramas were phenomenally popular in Korea and throughout Asia,
transforming the leads into international stars and even
helping to boost Korea's tourism industry. In 2003, Song Seung
Heon returned for the third installment, Summer Scent,
opposite Son Yae Jin. Three years later, Yoon presented the
fourth and final chapter of the seasons quartet, Spring Waltz,
a quiet drama about a romance born one spring on a small,
isolated island.
Left in a
small island town by his gambling father, young Lee Su Ho meets
the sickened Suh Eun Young, and they become good friends. Even
when Su Ho's unscrupulous father steals Eun Young's family's
money, the two remain steadfast in their friendship. A tragic
twist of fate, however, forces them to separate, with Su Ho
eventually getting adopted by a wealthy couple. Fifteen years
later, Su Ho is now Yoon Jae Ha (Seo Do Young), a loner piano
prodigy with a loving family and a fiancee (Lee So Yeon), and
Eun Young (Han Hyo Ju) has a suitor in the suave Philip (Daniel
Henney). Jae Ha and Eun Young's lives seem set in every way
until the childhood sweethearts cross paths once more...
Spring
Waltz features a refreshing cast of relatively new faces.
Leads Seo Do Young (Emperor of the Sea) and Han Hyo Ju (My
Boss, My Teacher) make a charmingly photogenic couple, while
Lee So Yeon (Super Rookie) displays surprising range.
Perhaps shining the most brightly is Korean American heartthrob
Daniel Henney (My Lovely Sam-Soon) who shows off both his
charisma and his language skills. Beautifully shot and wistfully
romantic, Spring Waltz is a fitting finale to the
seasonal drama series.

the very realistic dreams and challenges that young people face.
Co-starring in this crowd-pleasing hit is Oh Ji Ho (Fantastic

bespectacled beauty who steals their hearts.

Review:
Good
- I rated this good only because
of the supporting actors (Choi Bul Ahm, Lee GI Yul, Kim Jun Ho).
They made the drama entertaining and I just wish there were more
scenes with them. It was painful to watch Dennis Oh
"act" and on a lesser scale Nam Sang Me in this
drama.

Dr. Min Ki Seo ~ Jang Hyuk Lee Young Shin ~ Kong
Hyo Jin Bom ~ Seo Shin Ae Jin Soo ~ Oh Ji Ho ~ Shin Sung Rok ~
Kim Seung Eun
Synopsis:
MBC drama
Thank You marks the long-awaited comeback of Jang Hyuk,
who recently returned to acting after completing his military
service. Airing in a competitive slot, Thank You began
broadcast in comparatively low-profile fashion against dramas
like Devil and A Witch in Love, and slowly but
surely stole viewers' hearts with its touching story. Written by
Lee Kyung Hee of I Am Sorry, I Love You fame, this
sensitive romantic drama is a gentle tearjerker that celebrates
both the laughter and the tears that life brings. A visibly more
mature Jang Hyuk displays great range as a self-centered doctor
whose life changes when he meets a single mother and her
HIV-positive daughter, portrayed respectively by Kong Hyo Jin (Sang
Doo! Let's Go to School) and adorable child actress Seo Shin
Ae, who recently featured in the Park Kwang Su film Meet Mr.
Daddy. The drama also co-stars Shin Sung Rok (Hyena)
and Kim Seung Eun (Three Leaf Clover).
Doctor Min
Ki Seo (Jang Hyuk) is unbearably arrogant and always looks down
on other people. After losing his job, he ends up living on a
small island, renting from single mother Lee Young Shin (Kong
Hyo Jin) with whom he is always bickering. Ever since her
daughter Bom (Seo Shin Ae) was diagnosed with HIV, Young Shin
has worked hard to care for Bom, keeping a strong face and
cheery front despite the difficulties and discrimination.
Touched by the mother and daughter's love and strength, Ki Seo
finds himself slowly changing as arguments give way to
affection. But not even Ki Seo and Young Shin can protect Bom
from what lies ahead.

Yeon Jyung ~ Yoo

Yun Seok In Seok ~ Kim Yu Seok Jin Soo ~ Oh Ji Ho Choi Yun Seo ~ Park Ye Jin
Synopsis:
A
successful professional woman, Yeon-kyung grew up in a poor
family and had to earn her college tuition fees on her own. She
is also a good mother to her two children and a good wife to her
always-busy husband, a photojournalist. One day she runs into
her first love, In-seok, at a hospital that she visits for a
medical checkup. Her passionate feelings toward In-seok rush
back to her, but she also finds out that she has cancer.
She faces a tough decision of whether to stay with her husband
or choose In-seok, while also battling cancer. The series’
characters look familiar and the plot appears to have many
cliches at first glance, but the way the story unfolds stands
out from other TV dramas. Unlike other series, in which
cancer-stricken characters almost always die, this series shows
its main character eventually win the battle with the disease.
What also makes this series stand out is the scenes showing
strong family ties, interesting episodes taking place in the
hospital, and love stories of other characters.

Tae Woong ~ Hyun
Bin Jung Kyu ~ Lee Sun Ho Bo Ra ~ Sung Yu Ri
Synopsis:
After
winning hearts throughout Asia with his performance in My
Lovely Sam-Soon, Hyun Bin shows another side of himself in
the highly anticipated KBS drama The Snow Queen. Based on
the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name, The
Snow Queen is helmed by Lee Hyung Min, director of hit
dramas Winter Sonata and Sorry, I Love You. To his
latest work, Lee brings that same compelling mix of heartwarming
romance and heartbreaking tragedy with distinctive aesthetics
and a lingering atmosphere. Hyun Bin, departing from his
roguishly boyish image, adopts a more rugged look to portray a
lonely, troubled boxer. Opposite Hyun Bin is former FinK.L.
member Sung Yu Ri (Prince's First Love, One Fine Day)
who has slowly come unto her own as an actress.

Synopsis:
One of the
most popular Korean dramas ever comes to DVD with English

With
mistaken identities, conniving vixens, love triangles,
disapproving parents, Cinderella allusions, and co-habitation
romance, Tomato is everything you can expect from a
Korean drama - and more! If the plot and sentiments seem rather
familiar, it is only because Tomato came before the rest.
Starring top actress Kim Hee Seon (Sad Love Story) and
the handsome Kim Suk Hoon (Tube), this classic Korean
drama reached astounding ratings of 53% during its original
broadcast on SBS in 1999. An entertaining mix of lighthearted
romance and serious melodrama, Tomato was written by Lee
Hee Myung, who would later go on to create hit dramas like
Bright Girl's Success and My Fair Lady.
The bright
and cheerful Lee Han Yi (Kim Hee Seon) moves from Jeju to the
big city to pursue her dream of becoming a shoe designer. By
chance, she saves lawyer and shoe company heir Cha Seung Joon
(Kim Suk Hoon) after he gets hit by a car. When Seung Joon later
mistakes Han Yi's friend Yoon Sae Ra (Kim Ji Young) as his
savior, Sae Ra goes along with the mistake, hoping to win his
affections. But fate works in strange ways, and Han Yi ends up
renting the same place with Seung Joon and working at his
estranged mother's shoe company. The reluctant roommates
initially bicker incessantly, but grow closer over time. The
jealous and calculating Sae Ra, however, is determined to
sabotage both their relationship and Han Yi's career.

Hana ~ Park Shin Hye Yun Suh ~ Lee Wan
Hana's Aunt ~ Chung Kim
Cousin Maya ~ Reini Asami
Asahi Uchida ~ Fujiwara Ryu
Synopsis:
If your
feet are cold, your heart stays warm...
Rising
stars Park Shin Hye and Lee Wan first appeared on the small
screen together in 2003 as Choi Ji Woo and Shin Hyun Jun's
younger counterparts in Stairway to Heaven. Though they
only featured for the first few episodes, the two young actors
left a deep impression on viewers with their debut performances,
and have since become stars in their own right. In 2006,
producer Lee Jang Soo followed up Stairway to Heaven with
Trees in Heaven, this time with Lee Wan and Park Shin Hye
as the leads.
Co-produced with a Japanese production company, Trees in
Heaven was shot completely in Japan, and features a cast of
both Korean and Japanese actors. Park Shin Hye and Lee Wan
received a lot of praise for mastering their Japanese dialogue,
and the drama significantly raised their international profile
when it was aired in Japan. A picture-perfect Korean Wave drama
in every sense, Trees in Heaven follows a heartwrenching
romance born in the beautiful snowscape of Japan.
Bright and
optimistic Japanese teenager Hana (Park Shin Hye) lives at a
small hot springs inn owned by her mother. When her mother
decides to marry a Korean man, she tries her best to reach out
to her odd, introverted stepbrother-to-be Yun Suh (Lee Wan), who
likes to walk barefoot in the snow. He rebuffs her initial
efforts, but her cheer eventually wins him over. With their
parents on honeymoon, Hana and Yun Suh stand up to Hana's
spiteful aunt (Chung Kim) and cousin Maya (Reini Asami)
together, and the two develop an increasingly close relationship
over time. Yun Suh is forward in his love for Hana, but despite
feeling the same way, she cannot accept a sibling romance. After
graduating high school, she leaves for Tokyo with her admirer
Asahi Uchida (Fujiwara Ryu), and loses contact with Yun Suh.
Years later, Hana, Yun Suh, and Maya meet again. Time has led
them down very different roads, but the love and the rivalry
remain the same.

Synopsis:
A countryside girl who
grew up on a hillside village in Kangwon-do is later found out
to be the daughter of a rich family in Kangnam. How lucky!
Overnight she has realized every person’s fantasy. But is she
really happy? Is she truthfully happy? The goal of this drama is
to show how characters that seem like they would never be able
to truly communicate with each other start to look at the world
from inside the other person’s shoes; the process of how they
face difficulties with each other but learn to understand and
communicate; the process of how they heal their pain and find
themselves. And finally of how they discover in a fun and
touching way that everyone in the world, including themselves,
can be a hero. Whether you have a lot or not, whether you had a
great education or not, whether you’re old or young, whether
you have found true love or not...life can still be so lonely
and tiring. Becoming an adult means opening yourself to others
by finding out that life’s lonely journey isn’t only about
you. Those who know this are the ones that can taste the true
happiness of love. In the end, everyone’s happiness comes from
within their own heart. Our wish is that all people living in
this desolate and gray civilization will be able to feel true
warmth and happiness spreading through their hearts.

Good - This
drama has good chemistry and it's moments of cuteness.
Jung Ryo Won is better in "normal" roles like in My
Lovely Samsoon. In this drama she plays a simple, naive
girl from the country - but she acts like the girl's a simpleton
(not in a positive way!) at times. I love Kim Rae Won as
an actor, especially in Attic Cat, but this drama doesn't seem
to bring out the best in him. All in all, the drama is
good, but not great. If you like Kim Rae Won or Jung Ryeo
Won, it's a must see. Otherwise, borrow it from a friend!

This is a show about the
power of love - whether it be pure or an obsession - and how it
affects the lives of the ones we love by the decisions we make.

Excellent -
Debatable with other K-drama
followers, but this is my favorite modern drama.
The scenery, music and on-screen "sizzle" make it a
"must watch" drama and the soundtrack a "must

adopted into a hostile family environment. Yun-Ie's stepfather
holds genuine affection for her, but her stepmother looks down
upon her and treats her cruelly. Yun-Ie even has cruel
stepsiblings, just like Cinderella!
But this is a Cinderella
story where Cinderella takes her fate into her own hands, and
instead of one Prince Charming, Yun-Ie has two heroes to help
make her life a success. The first is Kang Min-Hee (Ahn Jae-Wook),
a young man who goes against his father’s wishes to become a
successful singer. The second is Lee Joon-Hee (Cha In-Pyo), an

will not compete with his friend directly. It's up to this
Cinderella to choose her own Prince Charming...

Synopsis:
Han Ga In
is probably the farthest thing from a witch in the eyes of
K-drama fans, but she has slipped into her title role in SBS
drama A Witch in Love (a.k.a. Witch Amusement)
with perfect ease. Portraying a strong and aloof businesswoman
this time, she is a world away from her timid, bespectacled
image in Super Rookie. Opposite the beautiful Han Ga In
is an equally photogenic line-up of actors - Jae Hee (Sassy
Girl Chun-Hyang), Kim Jung Hoon (Palace), and Dennis
Oh (Sweet Spy) - all in one drama! Add My Girl
director Jun Ki Sang to the line-up, and it's impossible to not
fall in love with this moody romantic drama and its beguiling
witch.
Labeled a
witch by those around her, advertising executive Ma Yoo Hee (Han
Ga In) is a perfectionist, always impeccably dressed and
professional to the point of coldness. Her strong, assertive
personality and successful career translates to an equally
unsuccessful love life. Clueless when it comes to romance, Yoo
Hee finds her perfect composure breaking as she gets caught
amongst three men: housekeeper-cum-relationship consultant Moo

Seo Jin King Yeong Jo ~

Synopsis:
A
phenomenal wave of fusion " sageuk" (or periodic drama)
continues to raid the small screens in Korea. While Jumong,
Four Gods, Dae Jo Young and Yeon Gae Somun
all channeled their focus on the earlier part of Korean history,
the latest influx of sageuk sees a trend of returning to the
Joseon era. In particular, two historical dramas, namely KBS's
Hansungbulgok and cable channel CGV's Eight Days,
recently offered their take on the reigning era of King Jeong Jo
(1776-1800), the 22nd monarch of Joseon Dynasty. MBC now joins
the bandwagon, offering their unique take on the legacy of a
popular king remembered as one of the greatest leaders in Korean
history.
Adopting
King Jeong Jo's pre-imperial name of Yi San, director Lee Byung
Hoon (Dae Jang Geum, Hur Jun) presents Yi San.
This fusion drama chronicles the life of King Jeong Jo, who
fought for commoners' rights and bureaucratic reformation. Far
exceeding the ratings of its competitors like The King And I
and Kwon Sang Woo's Bad Love, Yi San recently
spiced up its plot by introducing a Da Vinci Code-style
mystery in which the young King Jeong Jo tries to decipher the
codes in a painting.
Lee Seo
Jin (Lovers, Damo) dives into the role of King
Jeong Jo with majestic flair alongside veteran actor Lee Soon
Jae (Sangdo, Hur Jun) who plays the hot-tempered
King Yeong Jo, Jeong Jo's grandfather. Han Ji Min (Capital
Scandal) plays Seong Song Yeon, a palace maid who captivates
King Jeong Jo's heart, and later becomes his concubine.
Interestingly, almost half of the main cast are from director
Lee's 2003 mega hit Dae Jang Geum including Park Eun Hye,
Gyeun Mi Ri, Lee Jong Soo, raising the bar of expectations for
viewers and critics alike.
