Jonathan Lee, Youth Humanitarian Environmentalist, Promotes Peace
Suggests the Creation of International Children’s Peace Day

Jonathan Lee, a 14 year-old youth from Mississippi (USA) wants to suggest peace to the leaders of the U.S., South Korea, North Korea (DPRK) and China.  It will soon be one year since Jonathan went into North Korea to suggest to Kim Jong Il the creation of a Children’s Peace Forest in the DMZ.

Recently, Jonathan Lee returned from Washington, D.C., where he talked to some senators and/or their aides regarding the Children’s Peace Forest.  A direct result of the talks has been the idea for a day of remembrance and a day of activity to promote peace for the sake of children around the world in areas of conflict, in particular, on the Korean peninsula.  The idea for International Children’s Peace Day was presented to members of the DPRK Mission to the U.N.

Just as he did in Washington, D.C., Jonathan would like to speak to the political leaders in the Korean congress.  It is his wish to make several suggestions:

1.       Have Korean Children’s Peace Talks on March 21

2.       Make March 21, Int’l Children’s Peace Day

3.       Plant the DMZ Children’s Peace Forest

March 21, 2012 is an important inaugural day for International Children’s Peace Day because it will be the official first day of spring.  Spring usually represents rebirth or renewal.  It is a perfect time for hope; hope for a change in areas of conflict.  Hope for those affected by conflict.  Ideally, it would be a day when children from North and South Korea get together and start a new day.  That is, a new day for Korea and a new day for other areas in conflict.

The date also represents unity: 3-2-1.  Three to one – it represents going from being individual (3) to being united (1).

International Children’s Peace Day is a day to remember children that are in areas of conflict.  Especially for those children separated on the Korean peninsula.  Jonathan is trying to stop or at the very least, bring greater awareness to this tragedy.   He will be campaigning for International Children’s Peace day for three days.

RESOLUTION

Recognizing and supporting International Children’s Peace Day on March 21 of each year hereafter.

Whereas, beginning in 2002, the United Nations has designated September 21 of each year as the International Day of Peace, let March 21 be known as the day of International Children’s Peace; with these dates being 6 months apart.

Whereas, on this day in 1349 three thousand Jews were killed in Black Death riots in Efurt, Germany.

Whereas, on this day in 1960 in the black township of Sharpeville in Transvaal, South Africa, Afrikaner police open fire on a group of peaceful black demonstrators, killing sixty-nine people and wounding nearly two hundred in a hail of sub-machine gunfire.

Whereas, on this day in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr., begins his march from Selma to Montgomery, AL.

Whereas, while the United Nations dedicates the International Day of Peace to the cessation of hostilities and nonviolence, and calls upon all Nations and people to commemorate the day appropriately, including through educational efforts, and public awareness, let the International Children’s Peace Day be a day of awareness for the children and youth affected by hostile adult actions including war, kidnapping, sexual slavery, human trafficking and land mine accidents, etc.

Whereas, the establishment of a Children’s Peace Forest & Park in areas of conflict would serve multiple purposes including:

·         Convert an area of land from hostile use to productive and peaceful purposes

·         Provide a place for children and youth from the areas in conflict to peacefully interact (i.e., park and/or playground).

·         Plant food-bearing trees for the benefit of those who visit the park

·         Provide an area to learn about the similarities and differences of each region in conflict.

Whereas, while visiting and working in the CPFP, young people will become re-connected with their natural environment in order to give them the resources and tools with which to make intelligent decisions about their environmental responsibilities toward themselves and the earth.  They will learn to work together toward the mutually beneficial goals of peace and environmental stewardship.

Whereas, the motto for International Children’s Peace Day will be the same as for the Children’s Peace Forest & Park project: Above Politics, Above Conflicts, Above Borders, Above Ideology – It’s all about giving hope to the people and children around the world. Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--

                     Text Box: DRAFT(1) expresses its support for the ideals celebrated on International Children’s Peace Day, which is to be observed each year on March 21;

                     (2) supports bringing awareness to International Children’s Peace Day and continuing efforts to raise global awareness of the goals of Peace Day and to engage all sectors of society in the peaceful observance of the International Children’s Peace Day and the International Day of Peace , in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/282 of September 7, 2001, including work with United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations to promote life-saving and humanitarian activities on Peace Day; and

  (3) encourages people in the United States to observe International Children’s Peace Day, March 21, with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and educational activities, in order to raise awareness of the need for peaceful resolution of conflicts of all kinds affecting children.

(4) supports the creation of a Children’s Peace Forest & Park in areas of conflict.
