Music in Thailand

Thai people have known how to make musical instruments or to copy the patterns of others and adapt them to their own uses since ancient times.  Before they came into contact with the culture of India (which was widespread in Southeast Asia), the Thais apparently devised several kinds of musical instruments.  Later with Indian influences, the Thai people assimilated this musical culture into their own, particularly with Indian instruments that the Mon and Khmer culture had absorbed first.

Several new kinds of instruments were created after contact with the Indian musical culture, including the phin, sang, pichanai, krachap pi, chakhe, and thon.  Including many local versions of flutes, stringed instruments and gongs, there are about 50 types of Thai musical instruments.
